Our work in the United States

Our primary work in the U.S. is through our Mobile Dental Clinics. Dental care is nearing a state of crisis in this country. It's estimated that nearly one third of uninsured ER visits could have been treated more effectively through dental care.

In the U.S., children and adults from low-income families suffer from more tooth decay and are less likely to receive treatment than those in higher income brackets. The situation is aggravated by high levels of poverty and a shortage of dental professionals. Many children and families on the margins of society suffer in pain and discomfort. In Oregon, children are reported to suffer from more dental pain and disease than children in almost any other state.

Disaster Response

We also monitor and respond to large-scale disasters in our own country, providing humanitarian aid and volunteer teams.

  • December 2007: MTI responded to hurricane-force winds that left thousands in the Pacific Northwest without power or access to their homes.
  • September 2005: MTI provided aid and care to victims in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
  • September 2001:  Trauma volunteers counseled rescue workers.  MTI partnered with organizations in New York City to help hundreds of families affected by terrorist attacks.
  • March 2014:  MTI provided hygiene kits to victims and rescue workers after a devastating mudslide in Oso. WA.
  • April 2014:  MTI shipped health kits to families impacted by the deadly tornadoes in Little Rock, AR.

Global Health Education

We provide global health education in the Pacific Northwest through our two REAL. LIFE. Exhibits.  The exhibits are a walk-through, multi-sensory exhibit that allows people to experience what REAL. LIFE. is like for children affected by disaster, conflict and poverty.
